Another cruel outburst from her sister-in-law on what was supposed to be a day to celebrate began a downward spiral of events that would leave Holly questioning every choice she'd ever made and every belief she held as truth.
Had she done the right thing by her unborn child? Had she given enough, or too much, freedom of choice to her son? Did she truly, deeply know her husband and clinic partner, Roger? And what right had she to counsel infertile couples after her own pregnancies?
With the Fertility Tour only weeks away, a group of unlikely and disparate pilgrims look to her for guidance. But Holly's life has unraveled in ways she could not have imagined, including a restraining order against her. Will she be able to find her footing and make peace with her choices and herself? Will visiting religious and sacred feminine sites in England help her regain control or only tear her further apart?
Drinking the Knock Water is a breathtaking novel that with searing honesty takes us on an emotional pilgrimage through the relationships that make us who we are.
Drinking The Knock Water A New Age Pilgrimage edition by Emily Kemme Literature Fiction eBooks
Drinking the Knock Water sets as its premise a fertility tour of historic sites in England to aid infertile couples in coming to terms with their personal relationships and shared concerns. What it is really about, however, is Holly, a psychologist, and her husband, an infertility doctor, as they navigate their own set of unfortunate dilemmas. There are many, perhaps too many, themes here: infertility, Jewish culture vs. Catholicism, death of a child, domestic violence and its legal ramifications, and those are just in Holly's life! The other couples, while entertaining, never quite get fleshed out so that we can feel their angst or concerns, and the tour touches briefly on several sites that by all rights would be great fodder for spiritual exploration. Make no mistake, Ms. Kemme's prose is a dream. No one puts together a beautiful sentence or paragraph better and the entertainment factor is enjoyable. I personally would have liked a simpler and deeper story, to strike to the heart of a universal experience.Product details

Drinking The Knock Water A New Age Pilgrimage edition by Emily Kemme Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a book about love of family and how love can judge, hurt, and yet survive and forgive. Families are complicated, especially when they clash with the desires of the heart. The characters are beautifully drawn. You feel their pain and confusion, and you cheer for their peace of mind. Filled with twists and turns and surprises. You won't want to put it down before the last page.
Drinking the Knock Water A New Age Pilgrimage is an insightful, honest look into the complexities of layered and intertwined lives, confronting (or not) incredibly difficult life experiences, with rich esoteric undertones. This literary gem has the rare inclusions of humor, heart wrenching relationship navigations, with rich imageries in every word and scene. Emily Kemme does not disappoint her readers, leaving us enthralled with deeply intricate written artistry, leaving you wanting more the second you finish the last intelligent, penetrating thought. Drinking the Knock Water is a literary experience worthy of your reading list, one I enthuastically recommend.
In Emily Kemme’s novel Drinking The Knock Water, there’s toughness in the characters, toughness in the words on the pages and toughness in the author’s personal message. One of my favorite lines at the end of the story is when Roger says, “My family tree has limp branches, Holly. Sometimes you need to break them off before they make the rest of the tree rot.” Another line from the book that ought to be made into a meme and shared around the world is on page 285 and reads, “Those who truly live recount their experiences.” Kemme’s writing is illustrative and alive, something so real that few authors have the nerve to write about. Finishing the book is like breathing into a yoga pose and finding the indescribable release. - written by Stephanie Davis
Drinking The Knock Water! 2 pages left. Rampant thoughts running through my head. Remember going to a movie in the intimate little theatre in Estes Park and after people stayed to discuss the movie. Ironically, it is about a Jewish family - Doc Paskowitz whose passion is surfing, who raises 9 children on the beach, and who help him run a surfing school. The children are homeschooled of sorts. Thinking your book could be a movie and how great to then have a discussion about it after. Book Clubs, I’ve not tried much. They've bored me in the past. (Attempting to get my thoughts on paper before finishing the book and before they leave me).
Upon finishing the book Thoughts are coming in waves and I am not good at reconstructing them. Kept thinking we are running out of pages to bring this to a conclusion. Kept me guessing what the conclusion would be. Great conclusion but even better the profoundness of the deductions arrived at. I don’t mean profoundness (Yes I do) but I also mean beautiful way of expressing thoughts on subjects that aren’t easy to put into words that should resonate with many. Some would have to rely on inflammatory words and phrases to get their point across. You come across as not having to get your point across. Beautiful!
Drinking the Knock Water is one of those books you can’t put down and when you do, it still stays with you. I could so identify with the emotions that Holly had to deal with in the story. Especially her in-laws. Talk about opinionated people who think they are always right, and who think they have the right to point out your failings!
Though I’m not someone looking for fertility treatments, I do want to go on that pilgrimage Holly leads her patients on. To wander through historical sites in England sounds like it would soothe the soul, certainly the soul of a woman trying to keep up with the expectations of the world around her.
The book is filled with rich sensory details of New York, upstate country living, family life, prison (yikes), and historic sites in England. I felt I was there with Holly, especially when she had to drive a finicky stick-shift van in England, and on the wrong side of the road.
You can tell the author did her research because it reads as authentic. I highly recommend this novel.
I am in the first fourth of the book & so far find it interesting. The author will be speaking to our book group in two weeks.
I just finished reading Drinking The Knock Water A New Age Pilgrimage by Emily Kemme and I wanted to start over and re-read it, knowing what I know now. It's one of those rich, deep kind of novels that makes you think about so many things in life. We are all pilgrims in the New Age. Some of us know it. Some of us deny it. Some embrace it. And some hide it. Some of us arrive at our final destination and if we're lucky, we feel at peace. And some keep wandering. I know this review might sound a bit esoteric. Maybe that's what drinking the knock water does to you...
